Tight-knit

Tight-Knit is an installation inspired by the rich history of the Maq’ad of Sultan Qaitbey complex. The complex was built in the 1400s, during the Mamluki era, the work references that aspect of the building’s identity through the stitches and knots used as they resemble decorative motifs that were widely used then. I chose yarn as my medium for this project because it complements the stone that makes up the complex. I wanted soft, malleable yarn that is easily cut, yet is used to create enduring pieces that retain value, to exist in a space of exposed stone that has been standing for centuries.
