Artist Statement

The tactile, familiar nature of fabric makes it an ideal medium for me to build connections with my audience. Fabrics carry an intimacy within them; they recall emotions, make statements, and embody history. My practice is material driven, with a knack for worldbuilding and storytelling by drawing on sources such as spiritualism, ancient Egyptian history, personal narratives, womanhood and feminine implications, and folklore. I create objects that are rich in deliberate visual references that I’ve collected and curated through observation and research. My studio practice encompasses making wall hangings and tapestries, sculptures, and installations. I paint, embroider and manipulate fabric to create my tapestries and sculpture while my installations tend to utilize crochet, macrame, and three-dimensional forms.

Artist Biography

Rawan Abbas (b.1996) is a multidisciplinary artist based in Cairo, Egypt. She has participated in numerous shows in Egypt and abroad where she exhibited textiles, sculpture, installation art, and video. Notably, she had solo exhibitions at ARD Art Institution in Cairo in 2024, Westwerk and Galerie Genscher in Hamburg, Germany in 2023. She participated in the Dak’art Biennial in 2022, London’s 1-54 Art Fair and Abu Dhabi Art in 2021 and 2023 respectively. She took part in residencies such as Achterhaus Ateliergemeinschaft e.V., Westwerk’s International Artist Residency in Hamburg, Germany among others. Abbas facilitates printmaking workshops at the Contemporary Image Collective in Cairo, and she initiated a self organised printmaking club along with her workshop participants. Her textile practice engages with themes of womanhood and feminine implications, social dynamics, and Egyptian history and folklore while being influenced by her lived experience as an Egyptian Woman. Abbas acquired her BA from the Faculty of Applied Arts – Helwan University in 2020 and has studied Fine Art for a year at Cardiff Metropolitan University in Cardiff, Wales on a grant from Erasmus+ as part of her BA.

روان عباس (١٩٩٦) فنانة متعددة التخصصات مقيمة في القاهرة، مصر. شاركت في العديد من المعارض في مصر وخارجها حيث عرضت منسوجات، منحوتات، فن تركيبي، وفيديو. بشكل ملحوظ، أقامت معارض فردية في مؤسسة ارض للفنون في القاهرة في ٢٠٢٤، وفي وستوورك وجاليري جينشر في هامبورغ، ألمانيا في ٢٠٢٣. شاركت في بينالي داكار في عام ٢٠٢٢، ومعرض لندن للفنون ٥٤-١ في ٢٠٢١ وفن أبوظبي في ٢٠٢٣. شاركت أيضًا في إقامات فنية مثل إقامة آخترهاوس للفنانين في هامبورغ، ألمانيا، وإقامة الفنانين الدوليين في وستوورك بنفس المدينة، بالإضافة إلى إقامات و برامج فنية أخرى

تقوم عباس بتيسير ورش عمل في فن الحفر والطباعة البارزة في المجموعة الصورية المعاصرة في القاهرة، وقامت بتأسيس نادي طباعة متنظم ذاتيًا بالتعاون مع مشاركيها في ورش العمل. تركز ممارساتها الفنية في المنسوجات والألياف على مواضيع الأنوثة وتداعياتها الاجتماعية وديناميات المجتمع، وتتأثر بالتاريخ والفولكلور المصري، بالإضافة إلى تجاربها كامرأة مصرية. حصلت عباس على درجة البكالوريوس من كلية الفنون التطبيقية – جامعة حلوان في عام ٢٠٢٠، ودرست الفنون الجميلة لمدة عام في جامعة كارديف متروبوليتان في كارديف، ويلز، بمنحة من برنامج إيراسموس+ كجزء من دراستها لدرجة البكالوريوس.
